Will Iowa Repeal the Bottle Bill?

A proposal to end Iowa’s 33-year old bottle redemption program is gaining bipartisan support among state lawmakers, but stiff opposition from environmental advocates and landfill operators is dimming prospects for rapid action.

Supporters for repeal say the bottle bill is an outdated philosophy that doesn’t meet the needs of modern Iowans, while opponents say the state is ill-equipped to handle increased pressure on landfills.

Iowa is one of just 11 states with a bottle bill still in effect.

“It was a trailblazing policy in the 1970s but we’re in the twenty-teens now,” says Iowa Grocery Industry Association representative Scott Sundstrom . “It’s time to look to a different kind of system.”
